Mitral Valve Repair

I would like to introduce a breakthrough of robotics in the medical field. Although i don’t find it an obligation but I think we have to be aware of how robot technology invaded such field. While many robot inventions are focused on games, industrial applications and the likes, what’s pretty amazing is using robotic technology in the field of medicine. The precision and control of such robots are but no joke because it now deals with life. For all we know, you could not allow a single mistake or else a much bigger problem would occur, and the worse would be death.

In the advent of technology, I least expect the invasion of electronics and robotics in medicine. But here is one example that proved me damned wrong… mitral valve surgery using robotic wrist instruments, robotic scissors cutting chords and the like.

Mitral valve is the inflow valve at the left of the heart. Leakage (regurgitation) and narrowing (stenosis) are the common problems of this valve if left not to function well. When these problems are encountered, the solution would be either mitral valve replacement or mitral valve repair. There are pros and cons of going into replacement or repair, but what’s important is that a successful robotic surgery operation.
